Author Guidelines

The Journal of Paediatric Dental Research and Practice (JPDRP) is the official publication of the Nigerian Association of Paediatric Dentistry. It is designed to meet the continuing educational and information needs of Paediatric Dentists and general practitioners who treat child patients.

The Journal is published biannually (June and December) and accepts reports of original research, review articles, clinical case reports and innovations related to the practice of dentistry for children.

Statements and opinions expressed in the articles and communications are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the Editors or Publisher. The Editor(s) and Publisher disclaim any responsibility or liability for such materials and do not guarantee, warrant, or endorse any product or service advertised in this publication nor any claim made by the manufacturer of such product or service.

Manuscript Submission

The format of the Journal follows the uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to Biomedical Journals. Soft copies of manuscripts should be sent to the Editor, Journal of Paediatric Dental Research and Practice. These should be accompanied by a covering letter signed by all the authors and stating that the manuscript is not considered for publication elsewhere. Only those actively involved in the work should be named as co-authors. Copies of permission to produce published materials or the use of illustration that may identify subjects should be included. The manuscript would be reviewed anonymously and decisions regarding acceptance will be based on the advice of the reviewers, whose reports will normally be forwarded to the author(s) for consideration. The Editor reserves the right to edit the manuscript while the edited manuscript will be sent to the corresponding author. Once accepted for publication, the manuscript becomes the property of JPDRP and may not be published elsewhere without the written consent of the Editor.

Manuscript Preparation

Manuscript should be typed, double-spaced, on one side of A4 paper leaving at least 2.5cm margins all round. Pages should be numbered on the upper right corner beginning with the title page. Each manuscript component should begin on a new page in the following sequence:

Title Page. This should bear a concise but informative title of the manuscript, full names, qualifications and institutional affiliations of authors, address for correspondence and e-mail of all authors.

Abstract of original research should be structured with objective, methods, results and conclusion briefly stated and not more than 300 words. Abstracts of case reports should not be structured but should briefly describe the case(s) reported, highlighting the unique features, treatment method employed, and the conclusion drawn. Abstract page should bear 4 – 6 key words and a short running title of no more than 40 characters.  

Introduction should be brief and end with a statement of the objective of the study. A review article should be a major didactic article that clarifies and summarizes the exhaustive review of the literature.

Methods should describe clearly and concisely the method, including selection of observation and experimental subjects, apparatus and procedures in sufficient detail to allow the results to be duplicated. The statistical test utilized should be mentioned.

Results should be presented in a logical sequence in the text of the manuscript. Repetition of data in the text and in the tables should be avoided. Emphasis should only be on important observations.

Discussion: Repetition of results should be avoided. Rather, there should be analytical discussion of the implications of the results and other observations as related to the study.

Conclusion: The author(s) should bear in mind the aims or objectives of the research whether they have been achieved when concluding the research.  Any new discovery can be mentioned here. Authors should distinguish between conclusion and recommendation.

TYPES OF MANUSCRIPTS

Original articles
This will include randomized controlled clinical trials, studies of screening and diagnostic tests, interventional studies, case-controlled studies, surveys with high response rates and outcome studies.

Case Reports. 
New, rare, interesting and special cases can be reported.

Innovations
This may contain new discovery, new techniques, new surgical instruments of interest to readers and any scientific inventions that would enhance the practice of Paediatric dentistry

Review Articles
This will be solicited by the journal and should be a major didactic article that clarifies and summarizes the exhaustive review of the literature on an important area of interest. No structured abstract is necessary in review articles.

Acknowledgement. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission and approval from any one acknowledged by name, as readers may infer his/her endorsement of the data and conclusion. Only persons who have made contributions to the study and/or to the preparation of the manuscript should be acknowledged.

For Case Reports. The main body of the report should include a short introduction, the case report and a discussion of specific aspects of the case, with reference to reports of similar cases.

Description of Teeth: Should be in the FDI notation.

References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are mentioned in the text, tables or legends, using Arabic Numerals (superscript). References must be verified by the author(s) against the original quoted documents. Title of Journals and books should be abbreviated according to the format used in Index Medicus.

Journal Article: List all authors when six or less, when more than six, list only the first three and add et al), e.g. Adenubi JO. Dental health status of 4 and 5 year old children in Lagos private schools. Nig Dent J 1980; 1: 28-39 

Book

Dissertation or Thesis

Giwa AA. Oral health status of 12 – year old school children in private and public schools in Lagos State. National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, 2005.

Tables. Each table should be typed on a separate page, double spaced with no internal lines. Tables should be consecutively numbered in Arabic numerals as cited in the text with a brief explanatory title supplied for each.

Illustrations. Submit three sets of figures in J.peg format.

Legends for illustration. Type legends of illustrations double spaced, starting on a separate page, with Arabic numerals corresponding to the illustrations. Explain internal scale and identify methods of staining in photo-micrographs.

Permission of author(s) and publisher(s) must be obtained for the use of previously published materials (text, photographs, illustrations) and must accompany the manuscript when it is submitted for consideration for publication. The Journal bears no responsibility for authors violating such rule.

Proof, offprint and reprints. Grammar Proofs version will be sent to the corresponding author for checking and speedy return to the publisher. Offprint can be ordered at the time of printing while reprints can be printed subsequently but at greater costs.
